The Graphic and Media Design certificate will prepare students to either transfer to a four year degree program in Graphic arts or to secure an entry level position in the field of graphic design. Students will learn how to use industry relevant computer software to develop designs that communicate ideas, inspire, inform, and captivate consumers.

The pathway below represents an efficient and effective course taking sequence for this program. Individual circumstances might require some changes to this pathway. It is always recommended that you meet with an academic counselor to develop a personalized educational plan.

Introduction to elements and principles of design on the two-dimensional plane. Development of technical skill associated with the use of line, shape, texture, value, color and spatial illusion with consideration to contemporary conceptual approaches and practical application.

Introduction to basic skills, strategies and techniques of direct observational, and freehand drawing, with development of conceptual and compositional skills. Exploration of traditional and non-traditional methods using a variety of media.

    Introduction to multimedia technologies, concepts and principles of design and media production. Explores software applications as they relate to current methods of digital media production for print, screen, animation, interactivity, and 3D design. Investigates the historical and conceptual relationship between art, media, and technology.

    Adobe Photoshop I
    Design, creation, and manipulation of original and existing images and photographs using Adobe Photoshop. Preparation for the Adobe Certified Expert (ACE) certification exam in Photoshop.

    Digital Illustration
    Development of skills in digital illustration and its use in print and web-based media. Focus on the creation of vector graphics using industry standard applications including Adobe Illustrator CC.

    Interaction Design and User Experience
    User Experience Design (UX) focuses on the quality of experience a person has when interacting with a specific design. UX Design relates to the needs and wants of the user, as well as ease-of-use, and designs for the best possible user experience. This course will cover the design process, prototyping, documentation, and tools used within the UX field.

    Now that you are enrolled in your last semester of classes, it's time to apply for Graduation! Schedule an appointment with a counselor to complete a Graduation Check to make sure you are on track towards earning your degree/certificate. During your appointment, the counselor can assist you with submitting your Graduation Application. Feel free to review the Steps to Graduation prior to your appointment and be aware of the Graduation Application Deadlines found on Step 2.

    Introduction to publication design and page layout using Adobe Creative Cloud, primarily Adobe InDesign. Topics include tools and features used to produce professional publications for print production and digital publishing. Additional topics include color management, typography, and artwork integration.

    Provides students the opportunity to create and refine projects to meet the professional standards. Integrates projects into a portfolio which will meet the needs of entry level positions and transfer institutions. Students should have a minimum of five digital media projects from previous classes ready to be refined for portfolio.
