Public Health is the study of preventing disease and promoting the health of people and their communities at the local, state, national, and international level. Public health aims to protect the health of populations by promoting healthy lifestyles, researching disease and injury prevention, detecting, preventing, and responding to infectious diseases, and promoting healthcare equity, quality, and accessibility. The Public Health program provides students with a foundation for a career in public health, health education, and other health-related fields. Upon completing the necessary coursework, students will be prepared to transfer and continue their education and career preparation at a four-year institution of higher learning.

Introduction to Public Health
From a population-based perspective, the factors influencing health and disease focused on basic concepts and terminologies of public health and the history and accomplishments of public health officials and agencies. An overview of the functions of various public health professions and institutions and an in-depth examination of the core public health disciplines are covered. Topics will include history, health promotion, determinants of health and burden of disease, legal and ethical issues, epidemiology of communicable and non-communicable disease, environmental health, community organizing and health promotion programming, environmental health and safety, global health, healthcare policy, management, and career opportunities in public health.

This course explores the anthropology of Native Americans from prehistory to the present. Utilizing an anthropological and Native American Studies perspective, we examine sociocultural issues relevant to Native Americans such as economics, language, religion, identity, politics, and cultural change. Special attention will be given to the contributions of Native Americans to the field of anthropology and to the broader culture of the United States. Emphasis will also be placed on the impact of European colonialism and on contemporary issues such as discrimination, the struggle for sovereignty, and land rights. This course explores the anthropology of Native Americans from prehistory to the present. Utilizing an anthropological and Native American Studies perspective, we examine sociocultural issues relevant to Native Americans such as economics, language, religion, identity, politics, and cultural change.
