The AA-T, Elementary Teacher Education: Integrated Programs, prepares students for elementary school teaching careers, grades K-5. Our preliminary degree provides students with interdisciplinary subject matter expertise as required for seamless transfer to a four-year university’s bachelor’s degree completion program in Liberal Studies and fulfills its lower-division requirements. Its introductory education course emphasizes equitable, culturally responsive pedagogy and teacher performance expectations, including professional teaching standards. In addition, students complete early fieldwork placements in our community, which allows future educators to observe active teaching and learning in today’s diverse classrooms. These authentic, contextualized learning opportunities are intentionally designed for undergraduate students interested in public service, through teaching careers in elementary schools, grades K-5.

Child Growth and Development
Students examine the progression of development in the physical, cognitive, social, and emotional domains and identify developmental milestones for children from conception through adolescence. Emphasis is on interactions between biological processes, environmental, and cultural factors. Students may engage in various methods of observing children's development to evaluate individual differences and analyze development characteristics at various stages according to developmental theories.

Academic Reading and Writing
In this course, students receive instruction in academic reading and writing, including writing processes, effective use of language, analytical thinking, and the foundations of academic research.

    Introduction to Biology with Lab
    This combined lecture and laboratory course provides the non-biology major with an introduction to living things and their environment. Students use experimentation and investigation to develop important critical thinking skills. Students learn about the process of science, the building blocks of life, the role and regulation of DNA, how populations change over time, the movement of energy within and between life forms, and how species interact with each other and their surroundings. By the end of the course, students will be able to apply an understanding of biological concepts to current issues and their impacts on society.

    Elementary Laboratory
    Supervised fieldwork in public elementary school classrooms in both K-3 and 4-6 classroom environments. Emphasis on observation to increase understanding the role of the elementary school teacher, instructional methods, understanding curriculum as it relates to grade level state standards, cooperative relationships and professional ethics of teaching. This class is required for all students transferring to CSUSB seeking a teaching credential.

    Introduction to Public Speaking
    In this course, students learn and apply foundational rhetorical theories and techniques of public speaking in a multicultural democratic society. Students discover, develop and critically analyze ideas in public discourse through research, reasoning, organization, composition, delivery to a live audience and evaluation of various types of speeches, including informative and persuasive speeches.

    Art Appreciation
    Introduction to the visual arts from a multicultural perspective, focusing on the , conceptual, cultural and historical aspects of art. Overview of vocabulary, design elements and principles, technique and materials, and movements in art. Emphasis on the development of students' visual and aesthetic awareness and literacy.

    This course examines the evolution of education in the United States with a view to the philosophical foundations, historical trends, government involvement, law, and pedagogical movements. This course will also explore teacher preparation, education theory, multiculturalism, school reforms, safe schools, and controversial matters such as student rights, unions, and funding.

    Study of literature written for children. Books discussed in the course are essentially books for children, but values common to all significant literature are emphasized.

        Earth Science
        This course is a study of the essentials of Earth Science, including the geosphere, atmosphere, hydrosphere, and solar system. This course focuses primarily on the interactions between these Earth essentials, such as tectonics, Earth materials including minerals, rocks and the rock cycle, hydrologic cycle, weather and climate, and the Earth's place in the solar system.
